How to Create the Butterfly Wings:

1. Print and assemble the pattern

Print the four pattern pages at 100% or “Actual Size” on a 8.5x11 inch paper. Don’t select “Fit to Page.” Trim along the dashed tile borders and tape the halves of pieces 1 and 2 together. For babies under 9 months, print the pattern at roughly 85-90%.

2. Cut the main wings

Cut out the outer wing shape and trace it onto pink felt. Cut four pieces. The base of the wings is double thickness.

3. Cut the colorful wing sections

Use the dashed shapes on the pattern to cut the decorative sections from aqua, pale pink, yellow, and lavender felt. Arrange them on top of each pink wing before attaching anything. Leaving a little pink showing between the sections creates the outlined, layered look in the photo.

4. Attach the layers

Secure each colored section with glue, or stitch approximately 1/8" from the edge. For an extra handmade look, use contrasting thread. Don’t forget to trim the edges when finished!

5. Join the wings

Cut two rectangles of felt approximately 3.5” by 6.5”. Overlap the long edge of each rectangle with the inside of your finished wing (like a sandwich). Stitch or glue everything securely together. Repeat for the other side.

6. Optional: Add the heart details

Cut several small hearts from leftover felt and scatter them around the wings. There’s no need for the two sides to match perfectly; the slightly different placement makes them feel more playful and handmade.

7. Make the shoulder straps

Cut four 1” by 11” strips of felt. Attach two to the top of the center rectangle, and two to the bottom. These form adjustable shoulder straps.

8. Optional: Make the Deedly-Bopper Headband

Coil two pipe cleaners around a pen or pencil to make a spring. Glue a pom-pom to one end of each pipe cleaner, then attach the other end to a headband!

And you're done! Don’t worry if your wings don’t look exactly like the picture. It’s the handmade vibe that makes this costume a winner!

Safety Note: Because costume wings can catch on things, they should be used under supervision and removed during sleep, in car seats, when climbing, or during vigorous play.
